"The Tales of Beedle the Bard" by J.K. Rowling sold for 1.95 million pounds

LONDON (AFP) - Online retailer Amazon revealed Friday it was the mystery buyer of British author J.K. Rowling's first book since the phenomenally successful Harry Potter series.
"The Tales of Beedle the Bard" was sold at auction at Sotheby's Thursday to art dealers on behalf of an unidentified client for 1.95 million pounds (2.72 million euros, 3.95 million dollars), 40 times its expected price.
All proceeds from the sale of the handwritten single volume will go to Rowling's charity, Children's Voice, which helps vulnerable children across Europe.
Amazon has published editorial reviews of the book's content and photographs on its website, although it did not reveal if it would also make extracts from the book available.
"Even before establishing her charity, J.K. Rowling had done the world a rare and immeasurably valuable service, enlarging forever our concept of the way books can touch people, and in particular children, in modern times," Amazon's founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
Amazon has sold 12 million of the Potter books.
"The Tales" play a key role in the seventh and last Potter tome, "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows", which came out in July, featuring as the volume of five wizarding fairy tales left to Potter's friend Hermione Granger by headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
One of the tales appears in "Deathly Hallows", but the remaining four are told in "The Tales" for the first time.
There are just seven of the books, bound in brown Moroccan leather covered with a silver skull motif and jewels. Rowling gave the other six to people involved with the Potter books.
The 42-year-old author has become a billionaire, with the tales of the boy wizard translated into 64 languages.

"Golden Compass" loses its way at box office

"The Golden Compass," a $180 million family fantasy starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, failed to direct the masses to movie theaters.

The movie underperformed at the North American box office, opening at No. 1, but with weekend ticket sales of just $26.1 million, distributor New Line Cinema said on Sunday.

The struggling unit of Time Warner Inc had hoped the film would pull in between $30 million and $40 million during its first three days.


"It's a little bit disappointing," said Rolf Mittweg, president and chief operating officer of New Line's worldwide distribution and marketing operations.

The film's poor opening combined with a generally weak field to send overall year-on-year sales down for the fifth consecutive weekend, according to tracking firm Media By Numbers.

The top 12 films earned $73 million, down 12 percent from last year. Year-to-date sales stand at $8.8 billion, up 4 percent from last year, Media By Numbers said. But attendance is flat, indicating that higher ticket prices driving growth.

COSTLY DISAPPOINTMENTS

"The Golden Compass" is not the only big-budget film to stumble at the box office recently. The $150 million warrior epic "Beowulf," currently at No. 5 with $4.4 million, has earned $76 million after four weeks. The film's Viacom Inc -owned distributor, Paramount Pictures, hopes it will reach $100 million.

On the other hand, Walt Disney Co has a hit with "Enchanted," which slipped to No. 2 with $10.7 million after two weeks at No. 1. The fairy-tale romance has earned $83.9 million to date, and observers expect it to reach $150 million. Disney does not disclose movie budgets.

"The Golden Compass" was the only new release in the top 10. Based on the first book in British author Philip Pullman's acclaimed children's series "His Dark Materials," writer/director Chris Weitz's film is set in an alternate world ruled by an oppressive religious authority.

Mittweg said exit polls were favorable, but declined to go into detail. He hoped word of mouth would help the film in coming weeks, especially with school holidays starting. "It's all about longevity," he said.

The film also earned $55 million from 25 international territories, including No. 1 starts in Britain ($18 million), Spain ($10 million) and France ($5 million), all after five days of release.

But Mittweg said New Line sold off the foreign rights, with proceeds covering about 60 percent of the film's budget. Taking into account outside investors and tax breaks, he said New Line was covered for about 70 to 80 percent of the budget, and the film would be profitable for the studio.

Holiday comedies took the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Sony Corp's "This Christmas" held at No. 3 with $5.0 million, giving it a $42.8 million total after three weeks. Warner Bros' "Fred Claus" rose two to No. 4 with $4.7 million; it has tallied $65.6 million after five weeks.

The best performer in limited release was the comedy "Juno," starring Canadian actress Ellen Page as a pregnant teen. It earned about $420,000 from a total of seven theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The film's News Corp-owned distributor, Fox Searchlight, said it would expand the movie over the next few weeks before going national on January 4.

Also starting well was the period drama "Atonement," starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. The Focus Features release earned $815,000 from 32 theaters in 17 cities. Focus is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal.

"Grace is Gone" got off to a poor start with $14,000 from four theaters, the latest Iraq war-themed drama to fail at the box office. The Weinstein Co, a closely held firm run by former Miramax Films chiefs Bob and Harvey Weinstein, paid $4 million for the rights to the John Cusack film after a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Philippines Peso : Best Performing Currency in Asia

The Philippine Peso is now the best performing currency in Asia for 2007 (as of December 5) beating the Indian Rupee and other strong currencies in the region.


The local stock market hit a record high in June 1, 2007 while the peso is trading at around the PhP 42 level to a US dollar and is currently PhP 42.79 as of November 9, 2007, appreciating by 14%, edging out the Indian rupee.

There are only two reasons for the strengthening of the peso:

First, the Philippine economy is booming (although more than half of Pinoys think otherwise). We must admit that our President’s Expanded Value Added Tax law, although contradicted by the all-knowing “holier-than-thou” activists, renewed the investors’ interest in the Philippines. Because of this, our inflation decreased while interest rates have increased. The peso also became the favorite among currency traders in Asia.

Second, the remittances of thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) estimated to hit a record of $14.7 billion this year, 15 percent higher than the peak last year and the highest in 20 years.

The peso has also risen over 8 percent against sterling since the start of the year and 2 percent against the euro.

Economists expect the peso to continue strengthening. HSBC estimates it will hit 41 against the dollar by the end of next year from around 42.8 now. This morning alone, the peso almost hit the 41 bracket by registering another record-high of P42.28 against the US dollars.

In 2005, the Philippine peso finished as the best performing currency in Asia and the 5th strongest currency in the world. It gained 6 percent year-on-year against the US dollar to close at 53.09 as at end-2005 from 56.28 as at end-2005.

The Brazilian real was the best performing currency in the world at that time, strengthening by 13.7 percent against the US dollar in 2005. The second was the Kenyan shilling which gained 8.7 percent against the greenback. The Chilean peso and the Egyptian pound finished 3rd and 4th place by appreciating by 8.5 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively.

Last year, fourth largest economy in Asia - India - stole the best currency award from us. This year, our peso is no. 1 again. Political stability is the number one threat for us to maintain this feat this year.

Miriam Santiago had filed a resolution seeking to punish Trillanes for “disorderly behavior and unparliamentary acts and language, including his suspension or expulsion from the Senate.” Presidential Management Staff chief Cerge Remonde said Malacañang would not interfere in the Senate but stressed that Trillanes should be punished for his action. “Our revised penal code defines crime and provides for their punishment. Trillanes cannot be above the law. He must face the full consequences of his irresponsible actuation. Allowing him to get away with the damage he has done is the vilest form of mockery of justice,” Remonde said. “He is supposed to be a lawmaker, not a lawbreaker. Trillanes insulted all those who voted for him by his infantile messianic behavior,” he said.

Christian Bale to star in "Terminator" sequel

"Batman" star Christian Bale is in negotiations to headline the fourth installment of the "Terminator" movie series.

In "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," the Welsh actor would play the John Connor role originated by Edward Furlong in 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and continued by Nick Stahl in 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

Charlie's Angels" director Joseph "McG" Nichol is in negotiations to shoot the movie, which will be distributed by Warner Bros.

James Cameron originated the sci-fi series, which made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star, with 1984's "The Terminator." The series centered on a robot from the future where machines wage war against humanity, whose goal was to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance.

As the movies progressed, the son took a more prominent role. In "T4," Bale's character leads what is left of the human race against the machines.

Bale is currently filming "The Dark Knight," a sequel to his debut 2005 Batman outing "Batman Begins."
